Hello and welcome to Kale & Kettlebells Coaching! The health and wellness blog that aims to help people who travel often for work or pleasure find a balance and what works for them to stay healthy while on the road or away from home. I am a Holistic Health Coach based in Canada. My goal is to be a space where you can come to find information about how you can maintain your health, fitness, and wellness goals while on the road/away from home and to find comfort in knowing you aren't doomed in your goals when life is all over the place! First, I would like to tell you a bit about my story and how Kale & Kettlebells Coaching came about.
10 years ago I began working in the oil & gas industry in northern Alberta, Canada. My first job in the industry was as a laborer on a pipeline project. I was staying in a 5000 person work camp with all food and accommodation paid for by my employer. In these work camps all your breakfast and dinner food is prepared hot for you and there is a bag-up room in the camp fully stocked with all kinds of food you can pack for your lunch during the day when you are at work. All of them have on-site gyms and fitness facilities. Depending on the size of the camp will determine how big the on-site fitness facilities are and the equipment available to use.
Over the years of working in this industry, I have stayed in a variety of different accommodations - some projects have you staying in work camps where all of your food is cooked for you and lodging is provided, while other projects the employer pays a daily Living Out Allowance (LOA) on your pay cheque and it is up to you to find your own accommodation and provide your own food with the allowance given to you from your employer. After 10 years, the LOA option is my preferred option for projects I like to be on and later on, I will tell you why.
Some of the major challenges I have faced with this kind of work are the lack of options to cook healthy nutritious meals (like when staying in a hotel), or having all meals cooked for you (like in a work camp) and you have no control over what is being made and the ingredients in the food. Another challenge has been when it comes to fitness. Even though all camps have on-site fitness facilities, many are lacking in equipment variety, and sometimes if you are staying in a smaller town, there isn't much available for gyms and recreation centers and most hotels are lacking in the equipment in their gyms/fitness rooms.
My main focus with starting this business and this blog is to help people who travel a lot or work away from home to stay healthy by helping to create fitness programs that utilize minimal equipment and building plans with what they have available, but also helping you work with what you have available when it comes to cooking, food options, and nutrition when away or on the road. You will also find wellness content and products I have to offer. I hope that you find value in this blog and I am excited to have you here!
